In June 2002 we recieved a message of support from the leader of the Liberal Democrats in Birmingham City Council (who was in May 2005 elected MP for Birmingham Yardley).

Subject: Mercia and devolution

I take it from your web entries that you are interested in Mercia and

I have been in a similar situation for 20 plus years. I did a small
amount of campaigning on the issue, but the issue of boundaries and
devolution is quite live at the moment.

We have recently discovered another group working towards Mercian independence, the Mercian Socialist Party Whilst it appears they may be godless communists, we are willing to work with them in the struggle.
In 2005 we recieved a number of messags from rival groups representing other peopls of the "United kingdom". Excerpts follow
From: Richard Leese
Subject: Mercian Nationalist Party

I am somewhat dismayed at the apparent borders of your nation.
You would have Mercia include what is present day Lincolnshire,
when infact Lincolnshire is part of the nation of East Anglia
and a land of Viking settlers, unlike your Anglo-Saxon nation.
The truth of the matter is that the people of Lincolnshire are quite
different from your nation, in fact our language and culture are very
different from those of the interior lands you call Mercia. We have a
proud agricultural tradition and share close links with the other East
Anglian regions, those that the Wessex conspirators call Bedfordshire,
Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.
East Anglia would be happy to recognise your claim to freedom from the
Southern Imperialists, but we reject your claim to the lands east of the
Trent, that is land sovereign of the people of East Anglia and the Anglians
will fight for it should you dispute that. We have been forced to tolerate
rule by Wessex, by the houses of York and Lancaster. Even when Henry of
Bolinbrook became King of England, East Anglia still did not see freedom,
nor under the rule of our son Olivier Cromwell did the Low lands of the east
become free. But should we be forced to accept rule by Mercia, the people of
East Anglia would be silent no longer...
Yours Truly,

Subject: Miercna Cyningus

As a proud West Saxon of the Hwicce, or as you may say Hwinca, taught well,
as is our custom, may I be granted to correct some of your facts and verse?
If others know better then let them come forward.

When your lord Cyning Burghred was driven from his own lands by the
accursed Danes and his realm left to plunder and ruin the kindred people of
Ængla Land turned to our realm, alone, for their safety. It were the noble
Cynings of the Gewisse who saved all of us from death or bondage. First
Æthelbald, then Æthelberht and Æthelræd I who died bravely to save all
Ængelcynnes. And it was the noble lord Cyning Ælfred who did smote their

Without lords of your own and at the call of the Mercian folk those parts of
your lands not subject to the Danes were liberated by Ælfred who most
graciously returned to them to the scion of your own house Æthelræd
Icelingus who in gratitude paid homage to our noble Cyning Ælfred as his
Brytenwalda. And in that treaty, which you did neglect to mention, did
Æthelræd of Miercna (Mercia) marry Ælfred's eldest child, the Lady
Æthelflæd, and they ruled Miercna in his stead. There he ruled without
molestation, but sadly for you, no heirs, until 911AD. And on the day he
died your lands were inherited by the Sons of the Gewisse of the West Saxon
Folk. That is how your land of Miercna came to be united with the Gewisse
and all Ængla Land. It was not "conquered", it was given.

You do not understand your own folk either. You are of the Ængeln folk.
Bordered at the south by the East, South and West (or as we say Gewisse)
Séax. And not forgetting those Jutish scions of Hengist and Oisc in Kent.
Your own Ængelcynnes lie to the north and to the east. Feel free to call
yourselves "Cumrian"...if so, why did your cyning Offa build his dyke to keep
those Wealhas folk out!

But it were the Séax who were stronger and saved your Ængel lands when your
own rulers failed you.

I agree with you about the lack of the Ænglo-Séax letters Thorn and Eth from
modern keyboards.

I believe that culturally Gloucestershire is the shire of Hwicce,
indivisible from Somersæt, and forged with Wessex. As are the shires of
Berkshire, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Wight and the Dorsæt folk. Yours are all
north of that, and where the rest of your extremities lie are for debate,
but not with us, but by your other neighbours who may not agree with you on
all of them.

I believe as a West Saxon that both our kingdoms should once again be free
from the yoke of this "UK". The folk of our two nations, Ængeln and Séax
should work to divide the "union" forged in its present form, not by the
Laws of Ælfred but by the force of arms wrought on us all by the Normans,
the Plantagenet and the Anjou.

Finally, you do make some terrible spelling mistakes, even in the modern
English tongue. My writings are not perfect, and there are many who know a
lot more than I, but you should tidy up a bit!
In August 2010, we recieved a message from the "Winchcombeshire Anarchist Revolution", as follows:

Three cheers and Tiffins for the Freedom of Mercia, but we of the Winchcombeshire
Anarchist Revolution will never bow to Mercian aggression whence we were liberated
by the Wexians and went on to become our own County until taken away by the
London-Kent-Wessex Triumvate, Triumphate, TryAgain bunch, crowd, lot.

To mess with the Winchcombe Anarchist Revolution is WAR !!!

Yours Emphatically
Imperial Commassariat
Horrace of the Winchcombeshire Anarchist Revolution
(exiled in the current)
To this we can only reply that although secessionism may seem to lead the door to smaller and smaller units, obviously our arbitrary size for a state is correct and smaller units on the level of Winchcombeshire would be unviable.
In May 2013 we recieved this charming missive from a Bradley Healey from Weymouth College.

Dear Sir/Madam,

The website on Mercian nationalism draws large criticism as to the fact Mercia was a Kingdom inhabited by the Anglo-Saxons for only four hundred years, ending over one thousand years ago. It is impossible to predict any form of national success in the form of trade and economy. Mercia was merged with other Anglo-Saxon kingdoms to form a united country. The regions would have all spoken old English and been of largely Germanic descent. Paganism did have its last stand in Mercia before the arrival of the Vikings, Penda of Mercia being the final polytheist Anglo-Saxon King. Mercia has been culturally similar to the rest of England since the fall of the Roman Empire, so no parallels can be made with Cornwall or Wales, fully independent Celtic nations in their own right. The fact that you claim places in the midlands have Mercian origins may be true, but do not forget London is a name directly from the Latin language. Italy, France and Spain individually have regional independence arguments with more backbone to them than somebody unhappy with taxes to the nation’s capital (yes England has a capital, like all countries).

Finally your name Morwen (and your surname Brady=Irish)is a Celtic one, and your use of a Celtic symbol to represent ‘Germanic’ paganism that has had its presence replaced by Christianity for a much longer time. After all, following your logic of all possible regions having histories historically separate cultures to the nations they are part of now gives raise to the argument, shouldn’t every region have independence from any country everywhere in the world?

Good riddance, and good luck voting UkiP, slightly hypocritical to your local views.
